Man Arrested After Shots Fired in Apartment
EL PASO — A convicted felon suspected of firing a handgun at an apartment early Sunday morning was arrested by Las Cruces Police.
Gilbert Uranga Jr., 23, is charged with four counts of shooting at a dwelling or occupied building, and one count each of possession of a firearm by a felon and tampering with evidence, police said.
Las Cruces Police detectives learned that at around 3 a.m. Sunday, Uranga started arguing with several men who were at a party in a nearby apartment. At some point during the argument retrieved a handgun from his residence and went back out to the parking lot where he fired several shots toward an upstairs apartment.
Police said no one was struck by the gunfire.
Uranga’s roommate eventually took the handgun away and hid it. Charges against the roommate are pending.
Police said at least one partygoer was injured during a fight that erupted in the apartment complex parking lot. The injury was not life-threatening.
Detectives learned that Uranga was convicted in 2007 on a felony offense of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Uranga was arrested Sunday evening and booked into the Dona Ana County Detention Center with a cash-only bond set at $50,000.
