Man allegedly strikes El Paso police officer with SUV
El Paso, TX (KTSM) — El Paso police arrested Edgar Rico, 24, Sunday for allegedly striking an El Paso police officer with his car during an alleged chase.
It started when officers responded to a domestic violence incident at a home in the the 800 block of Montera at 12:35 a.m. Sunday. Rico is accused of choking a woman after she refused to give him the keys to her SUV. The victim suffered visible injuries to her neck, but did not go to the hospital. When the victim's relative went outside, Rico drove away in the SUV.
Officers found Rico sitting inside the SUV about a block away in the 700 block of El Arco. When Rico saw officers approaching, police said he drove away and hit a uniformed officer. The officer, who was not identified, was not injured and is said to be a 5 year veteran assigned to Mission Valley patrol.
Police said Rico did not stop after allegedly hitting the officer and led police on a chase along I-10 east. El Paso County Sheriff's Office deputies and Texas Department of Public Safety State Troopers took over the chase once Rico drove out of city limits and into El Paso County. Rico reportedly tried to drive back into city limits on I-10 west, but a Sheriff's deputy used a tire deflation device to stop the SUV.
Rico was arrested and charged with family violence, aggravated assault on a public servant, and evading arrest.
