Las Cruces, NM (KTSM) — Alan Golden, 23, is charged with stabbing a Las Cruces Police Department service dog several times.
Police said it happened shortly before 1 a.m. Monday near the corner of Walnut St. and Dr. King Way where Golden was reportedly lying on the ground.
Officers said Golden was carrying a large knife and refused to put it down after officers repeatedly demanded that he drop it. Police said Golden then held the knife to his own throat and tried to entice officers into shooting him.
Police deployed a beanbag round and then released "Dave," a 6-year-old Dutch shepherd that has been with the department for four years.
During the struggle, Golden allegedly stabbed the service dog several times, causing a deep wound in the dog's left shoulder. The dog was taken to the Las Cruces Animal Emergency Clinic where he received five staples. He is recovering at his handler's home in Las Cruces.
Officers used a Taser gun to control Golden. Golden was taken to University Medical Center in El Paso for the injuries he suffered during the struggle with the dog. A warrant has been issued for Golden's arrest once he is released from the hospital.
