LAS CRUCES — Las Cruces Police arrested a man suspected of stealing more than $15,000 worth of jewelry and a firearm from a friend’s home.
Steven Ryan Manzano, faces one count each of aggravated burglary and tampering with evidence, and two counts each of larceny and receiving stolen property.
Detectives said Manzano broke into a friend’s home on Diamond Drive June 24. He allegedly removed a safe that was bolted to an entertainment center. Detectives suspect Manzano took several pieces of jewelry, a .38 caliber handgun, holsters and several boxes of ammunition during the burglary.
The contents of the safe were valued at $15,190.
Manzano is suspected of taking the safe to a local locksmith where he claimed it was his deceased grandmother’s and asked that it be opened.
Manzano claimed that he tried to sell the jewelry to local gold buyers who refused to buy the jewels for the amount he was asking. Manzano allegedly disposed of most of the jewelry, the handgun and the safe in area dumpsters.
Manzano was arrested Tuesday evening and booked into the Dona Ana County Detention Center with a cash-only bond set at $20,000.
