Malakhi Olvera becomes Chihuahuas player for a day

EL PASO, TEXAS (KTSM) - The 11-year-old who prides himself in being the El Paso Chihuahuas biggest fan got to sign a one-day contract with the team on Thursday.

Malakhi Olvera was given the honor of being part of the Chihuahuas pack after meeting former Chihuahuas outfielder Travis Jankowski, who now plays for the San Diego Padres.

Jankoski "scouted" Malakhi while touring Providence Children's Hospital, where Malakhi is being treated, a few weeks ago.

Malakhi's mother, Gloria Jaloma Portillo, said her son suffers from a condition that has caused a tear in his intestine and rectum, limiting what he can eat.

He has been out of the hospital 13 times since first being diagnosed two years ago. Portillo says there is no cure for Malakhi's condition, but they are optimistic.

"It is hard, it is not easy to have a child in the hospital," said Portillo.

She said keeping the surprise was the hardest part, but worth it.

"Just seeing the reaction when everything happened and when he walked into the stadium," said Portillo. "It's just wonderful. He's my little boy."

As part of the deal, Malakhi got his own locker, with his very own Chihuahuas uniform. He also got to throw out the first pitch at the game.
