The National Transportation Safety Board wants states to make big changes, to greatly reduce the number of lives lost in drunk driving crashes.
NTSB officials said if all 50 states changed the blood alcohol limit to .05, 1,000 lives could be saved each year.
El Paso has not been immune from drunk driving crashes. Local advocates, mothers against drunk driving believe lowering the BAC limit will help, but it is just a start.
"It's just a small piece of the puzzle and so overall we'd love to support the actions of seeing high visibility of law enforcement, ignition interlocks in the cars of all DWI offenders and to embrace the technology of cars not letting people drive under the influence," said Vanessa Luna Marquez MADD’s Program Coordinator.
Marquez said drunk driving is 100% preventable.
