Lower Valley Rollover Causes Extensive Gas Line Damage

Friday, November 23, 2012 - 7:10pm

An SUV was speeding eastbound on Padilla Drive yesterday afternoon, when the driver apparently lost control of his vehicle, hit a small car, and then the vehicle overturned. The SUV slammed into the fence of a home on the 8900 block of Padilla Drive, taking down part of the front fence and destroying the home's main gas lines.

Natural gas spewed for 30 minutes until firefighters and the gas company arrived to shut the gas off. Oscar Nuñez and his family live in the cluster of homes where the accident happened. They're forced to live in a hotel until Sunday. Nuñez says the wreck will cost his family $10,000. He says even though there are speed limit signs posted on his street, drivers continue to drive very fast.

Residents of the Lower Valley neighborhood are filling a petition with the city to request that speed bumps be placed along this particular stretch of Padilla Drive. They hope speed bumps will force drivers to slow down.

Neighbors say they could smell alcohol on the driver's breath when they helped him out of the car after the wreck happened. One resident insisted the driver even tried to take off running but was stopped by police.
