Top Republican speaks out against border wall

EL PASO. Texas (KTSM) - Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle are speaking out about the President's decision to send troops to the southern border.

The Republican Speaker of the Texas House Joe Straus came to the borderland and expressed his concerns about the move.

Straus spoke with local leaders who have expressed they aren't happy about the President's immigration policies.

Straus says the administration needs to be listening to people living on the border to find out what's best for their individual communities.

"You know with all due respect to the experts in Washington I tend to defer to people on the border," said Straus.

Last week, Mexican senators began urging President Enrique Peña Nieto to temporarily suspend cooperation with the United States on immigration and security issues in response to tweets from President Trump.

The Speaker of the House emphasized strengthening our relations with Mexico and building bridges instead of walls.
