Anthony Residents Fed Up With Growing Gang Problem

By Elsa Valenzuela

Tuesday, July 17, 2007 - The townspeople of Anthony, New Mexico are fed up with their gang problem and tonight they demanded answers at a town hall meeting called by the Dona Ana County Sheriff's Department.

The Dona Ana County Sheriff took questions for almost two hours tonight -- all about the growing gang problem-- and pledged his support. In the last few months, two deadly shootings and one violent stabbing have rocked this small community -- which borders Anthony, Texas.

Many affected by the violence spoke out at tonight's meeting. The sheriff has committed four additional deputies to Anthony, New Mexico.  In addition, the police chief in Anthony, Texas and the Dona Ana County Sheriff have gotten the ball rolling on a procedure that will allow the two agencies to work together on crime issues.

Many we spoke to just want to see a change. Some Anthony residents also called for their neighbors to step up and be more vigilant. More after school programs, better street lighting and bike cops were also talked about as possible solutions. The sheriff also says there will be a multi-agency task force that will focus on trouble areas like Anthony. However, it's still unclear when that group will begin work.
