Candy Meth Causing Concerns

By Elsa Valenzuela

Friday, June 22, 2007 - A new form of a dangerous drug is popping up in New Mexico. Candy-flavored methamphetamine is causing concern.

It tastes like candy, looks like candy, and is a nightmare for parents. It's called candy meth and is one of the newest drugs to hit the streets.

Unlike crystal meth, which is smoked, all it takes to get high on candy meth is popping it in your mouth.

"It's got all the same properties of meth. It's got all the same dangers of meth, except that it's marketed to kids because it comes in flavors that I guess kids would like," says Chris Minnick with the New Mexico Department of Health.

Strawberry is the most common flavor to show up in New Mexico and experts say if kids are hooked by the taste, it's likely they'll get hooked on the drug.

Experts say there are signs parents can look out for.

"We've talked to some meth users who were awake for 36 to 48 hours at a time. It causes you to start losing weight dramatically," says Minnick.

Experts say talking to your kids about the dangers of drugs is the best prevention.
