Prosecutors Appeal Judge's Dismissal of Cuban Militant Case

By News 1 News 1

Wednesday, June 6, 2007 - Federal prosecutors have appealed a judge's decision to drop an immigration fraud case against anti-Castro militant Luis Posada Carriles. The case was dismissed last month by U.S. District Judge Kathleen Cardone, who ruled that an interview with Posada was manipulated by the government to create a criminal case against him. Posada is a former CIA operative wanted in Venenzuela and Cuba on charges of masterminding the 1976 bombing of a Cuban jetliner which killed 73 people. He was also detained in the U.S. on immigration charges in March 2005. Posada had been awaiting trial in El Paso on charges of lying to U.S. immigration officials, but was freed last month after the charges were dropped. Details of the appeal have not been released.
