Dona Ana County Detention Center Director Arrested

The director of the Dona Ana County Jail is on paid administrative leave after he was arrested Saturday night. Chris Barela was charged with assaulting a peace officer and resisting arrest.

Tuesday, February 20, 2007 - The incident happened at Barela's home. Las Cruces Police say they responded to a call about a suicidal man who lives in the Barela home. Barela became upset when one of the officers who responded drew a taser. The Dona Ana County Manager is investigating the incident. Barela is scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday.
