Tuesday, July 15, 2008- The 9th person to plead guilty in the on-going El Paso public corruption case did so Tuesday morning at the Federal Courthouse.
Fernando Parra pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to defraud the taxpayers of El Paso County. As part of his plea deal with the government, Parra admits that he, along with others, attempted to bribe members of El Paso County Commissioner's Court by offering cash and trips in exchange for their votes. Parra also admits that members of the Court accepted those bribes. We still do not know exactly which county commissioners accepted those bribes because the plea agreement was sealed by Judge Frank Montalvo.
In addition to pleading guilty to the conspiracy charge, Parra also pleaded guilty to 1 count of possession of lewd or obscene pornography. In January when federal agents searched his computer at the County Courthouse, Parra was arrested for possession of child pornography.
Tuesday in court, the government admitted that among the 4 pornographic videos found on the computer, there was only 1 image that might have involved someone underage. Parra's attorney tells Newschannel 9, that the government will drop the child pornography charge.
"That charge is absolutely going to be dropped. He did not plead guilty to it, he only plead guilty to count three of the indictment that has absolutely nothing to do with child pornography." says Attorney Gal Pissetzky.
Parra was released on a 45,000 dollar bond and into the supervision of his wife. If convicted of the conspiracy charge, he could face up to 20 years in federal prison and up to a 250,000 dollar fine.
