Sun City Dermatologist Peter Herman says most sunscreen can provide some protection against the sun's rays but the SPF number doesn't mean protection against all dangerous solar rays. He says the SPF protects you from UVB rays which cause sunburn but not from UVA rays that penetrate deeper and are more likely to induce skin cancer.
So for complete protection doctors recommend broad spectrum sunscreen which guards against both UVB and UVA rays. Dr. Herman predicts in the future broad spectrum sunscreen will be the only kind sold. Until then its up to you to decide what kind of sunscreen to buy.
