Shortly before ten a.m. an El Paso jury decided Renteria will return to death row. The jury had to consider two issues. First, whether Renteria would still pose a threat to the community. They decided he would. Second, if there was any reason why he should stay alive. The jury voted no.
Renteria was convicted and first sentenced to death in 2003, for raping and killing 5-year-old Alexandra Flores, but an appeals court overturned the sentence. Members of Alexandra's family were pleased with the verdict and District Attorney Jaime Esparza said he is gratified the jury, "did the right thing." Renteria will be formally sentenced next week.
