Hazmat Situation

By KTSM News 1

Tuesday, May 6th, 2008 - A strange substance forced evacuations in far east El Paso after a hazardous materials spill. It happened at the Flying J truck stop at Gateway and Horizon. Investigators tell us a powdery substance at the truck stop  reacted strangely with the air.  The substance burned at a very high temperature, even melting the roadway.  As of 10 p.m. Tuesday night, the material had stopped burning and no longer posed a threat to nearby business and homes.  Customers were allowed back into the Flying J truck stop.  Hazmat crews tell NewsChannel 9 they collected the unknown substance, which is now the responsibility of the land owner to test and/or dispose of.
