Monday, February 25, 2008 - New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson signed a tougher measure for Domestic Violence, by increasing penalties. Now a third domestic violence related conviction will result in a fourth - degree felony, punishable by up to 18-months in prison. Four or more convictions will be a third – degree felony. The new law will apply to convictions after July 1st of this year.
New Laws are also up ahead for New Mexico Physician Assistants, as Richardson signed a measure that will broaden their roles. They will now be allowed to help in assessing disabilities and directing the use of some medical devices. The new measure is meant to encourage greater use of physician assistants and help out in the shortage currently facing health care professionals in New Mexico.
Governor Richardson also signed legislation that will change the lineup of tests required for New Mexico high school students. A 2007 law requires a competency test for students to receive their high school diploma, starting in the 2010-2011 school year. The bill signed by Richardson allows the new array of tests to serve that purpose.
