La Posada Home is more than just a shelter, it is a place dozens of women, children and families turn to when they have no where else to go.
"These are not dead beat mothers, these are mothers that really want to work and provide for their families and provide a better environment for their children," executive director, Monica Martinez explains.
Monica Adams is one of those moms. She and her four children left California a few months ago to escape an abusive home.
"We left all our stuff behind. We came out here with our clothes and nothing else," she says.
Although she's working, going to school and looking for a more permanent home, Monica's still benefiting from the many services La Posada has to offer.
"As far as resources, clothing, hygiene stuff, food, whatever we need, " Monica says.
And she is not alone. The shelter's executive director says although they see a lot of domestic violence victims, the economy is changing the face of their population.
"We're seeing more people that have never been homeless that have lost their jobs and now they're struggling and now they're coming in," Martinez says.
With a growing waiting list and monetary donations down, the shelter is in need of extra help.
La Posada Home accepts various donations including, clothes, blankets, household products, food and money.
La Posada Home is holding a fundraiser on November 12, 2009 from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Gonzalo's Restaurant on 401 E. Nevada Street.
