It was an alarming start to the school week. A male student from Canutillo High School tweeted that there would be shootings at the school on Friday, December 21st. Canutillo Independent School District immediately contacted police, who started investigating the threats. Police caught the student and he was punished. The student's punishment and grade level are still unclear. Investigators say the student's tweet was just a prank.

Canutillo ISD spokesperson, Gustavo Reveles said, "We have acted accordingly to our code of conduct and the disciplinary action has been taken to match his actions"

After the tweets on Monday, new rumors surfaced at Canutillo High School claiming the school shootings would actually happen today. Canutillo High School and police enhanced security on campus today, and will do so again on December 21st. When the decision here was made, the tragedy would strike an elementary school in Connecticut leaving 26 dead, 20 of them children.

"The very unfortunate incident in Connecticut is just a very tragic coincidence to everything that's happening in Canutillo," said Reveles.

Schools within the Gadsden Independent School District in New Mexico were under lockdown today because of the Connecticut shootings. District Spokesperson, Luis Villalobos says there is no threat against the schools and the lockdown was to let students and parents know Gadsden is prepared for emergency situations. Gadsden is no different than any other school district in trying to protect their students. So a lockdown procedure is one of the normal procedures that a school implements regardless of the situation," said Villalobos.

Parents in El Paso are saddened by the Connecticut tragedy and worried about the threats here at home.

Even though Canutillo ISD has been dealing with threats of a shooting, Gustavo Reveles says it did not put schools on lockdown because their investigations concluded it was unnecessary.
