Severe flooding in Florida from Tropical Depression Debby is triggering a response from the American Red Cross El Paso as it sends seven volunteers to assist with sheltering and client services.

Two Red Cross team members have already deployed to assist in the relief efforts, and five more will be departing Friday morning. The El Pasoans will help Red Cross teams with sheltering, feeding and client outreach operations. The Red Cross has set up more than a dozen shelters for evacuees in Florida. It is expected that the team will be on site near Gainesville helping those in need for about a week.

“We’re excited to join in the relief operation to keep people safe after this storm,” said Mark Matthys, Executive Director, American Red Cross El Paso. “Families need our help right now with a safe place to stay, food to eat and a shoulder to lean on.”

The American Red Cross is running multiple disaster relief operations after with record wildfires in Colorado, and on the other extreme, excessive rain in parts of Florida. Tropical Depression Debby has dumped as much as ten inches of rain on most of the state, with some areas getting up to 25 inches of rain. Truckloads of additional relief supplies are on the way to Florida and 20 response vehicles are ready to start distributing items to help as the clean-up begins there.
Red Cross workers have served more than 32,000 meals and snacks to people affected by the wildfires and flooding, have made almost 3,300 health and mental health contacts, and distributed more than 4,300 relief items.
