Local inventor Carlos Kato entered a national competition sponsored by Wal-Mart, proposing the concept of a 'personal misting umbrella.'

The concept, according to Kato, is a means to quickly cool off while outside in the scorching sun. The personal misting umbrella triples as a tool for shade, cooling and protection from rain.

The Wal-Mart contest, being hosted on www.getontheshelf.com, has gained the attention of over 4,000 entries nationwide. The competition will run in two phases: the first began on March 7 and will continue through April 3. During this phase, people can vote via Facebook or text their vote. Instructions are available on the website.

The top ten inventions with the most votes will move on to round two scheduled between April 11 and April 24, where individuals can vote for their favorite invention.

The grand prize winner will be provided with the opportunity to sell the product on the Wal-Mart website and in stores.
