A simple act of respect and compassion that fused two El Paso rival high schools has scored more than just a 2-point basket. The story of two basketball players and a inspiring coach have appeared on CBS News, ESPN and now, the Ellen Degeneres show.

As NewsChannel 9's Aaron Rich reported, Mitchell Marcus, a special needs student, spent three years as the team manager for the Coronado boys basketball team. Head Coach Peter Morales decided to pay Mitchell back for all he had done for the Thunderbirds by letting Marcus dress with varsity on Senior night, his last home game at Coronado. Towards the end of the game, Mitchell was asked to play in the final minutes against rival Franklin.

What ended up happening that night was the beginning of a seed of compassion that flowered into a viral act of unity, honor and sportmanship that what many say restored faith in humanity throughout the world.

Tune in to KTSM Tuesday at 4pm for the interview.
