Little Bear Fire Reaches 40 percent Containment

The Little Bear fire burned stands at 37,912 acres, with 40 percent contained as of Thursday morning. 

Communities open to residents included Rancho Ruidoso, High Mesa, Deer Park, Magado Creek  (must enter through Cora Dutton Rd. to HWY 37 and must have proof of residency) and Ranches of Sonterra (Unit 3.)

There was the possibility that more areas might be open for resident re-entry later Thursday.

The following communities were still closed to residents:

• Enchanted Forest
• Villa Madonna (this area is currently still without power)
• Nogal Canyon
• Bonito Lake Campgrounds
• Angus
• Sierra Vista
• Sonterra (1, 2)
• Copper Canyon
• Loma Grande

Highway 48 is now open from Ruidoso to Capitan. However, entrances to burn-affected areas are still closed to traffic (Enchanted Forest)

The following road closures are still in effect:
• NM 532 (Ski Run Road)
• HWY 37: Road block is now at Mile Marker 5 (coming towards Capitan/Ruidoso from Carrizozo)
Shelter Information:

The Red Cross has set-up a shelter for evacuated residents at the Ruidoso High School gym. In addition, the Southern Baptist Disaster Relief group is serving free food to volunteers and evacuees at the Ruidoso High School cafeteria each day. Breakfast at 8:00 AM, lunch at 12:00 Noon and dinner at 6:00 PM.

Public Meeting Information:
There will be public meetings each day at 4:30 PM and 7:00 PM at the Ruidoso High School gym, and at 7:00 PM at the Lincoln County Fairgrounds.
