El Paso - The legalization of marijuana is once again gaining support from El Paso leaders.

Councilmembers Beto O'Rourke and Susie Byrd organized an event today at the Paso Del Norte bridge which aimed to grab Washington's attention on the issue.

This week President Obama is meeting with Mexico President Calderon.

O'Rourke says he is supporting a move to regulate and tax marijuana because the status quo is not working.

"I try to make very clear this is not a silver bullet this idea of ending prohibition of marijuana," O'Rourke said.  "I think it would significantly destabilize the cartels and weaken their ability to do what they're doing in Juarez today which is to kill and terrorize with impunity."

O'Rourke says experts have predicted the prohibition of marijuana would save the federal government $20 billion a year.

LEGALIZATION IS THE SOLUTION? OUR COMMUNITY REPS HAVE OBVIOUSLY NOT DEALT WITH A DRUG ISSUE WITHIN THEIR FAMILY. MJ IS A STEPPING STONE DRUG. TO EVEN CONSIDER LEGALIZATION IS A SLAP IN THE FACE TO THE FAMILIES DEALING WITH DRUG ADDICTION OF THEIR LOVED ONES. WE NEED TO KEEP IN MIND OF THE NEW GENERATION WHO WILL GET THE MESSAGE "SAY NO TO DRUGS" BUT MJ IS OK. WHAT OTHER SOCIETY ILLS WILL OUT ENLIGHTENED CITY REPS GIVE INTO?

we must legalize it. there may be some downsides to legalizing it, but think of all the good that would come from it as well. new job opportunities, more money for el paso, juarez and las cruces. the cartels would have a huge loss in the money that they get back from the marijuana they contribute to the U.S. the prohibition of marjuana is a joke, obviously. legalize it, tax it and it would be a big first step to wiping out a huge portion of the drug cartels income.

Rediculess & over the heads of many. Especially those who never taken it before. These same city leader's will be the first to say they never tried it. So how do they know the benefits & loses. I can for myself, MJ may not be addictive like other drugs on the streets. But the long haul effect is around the corner. Legalize it, crazy! this is blood money that many in Jaurez and El Paso have already paid the price for. Some to the extent of their lives. What will follow?

This is what Dr. Grinspoon said in 2006 about Cannabis Sativa medicinal Plant:

"Cannabis will one day be seen as a wonder drug, as was penicillin in the 1940s. Like penicillin, herbal marijuana is remarkably nontoxic, has a wide range of therapeutic applications and would be quite inexpensive if it were legal".
Dr. Lester Grinspoon, professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, Los Angeles Times, May 5, 2006

Let's just do as the experts suggest that we do!

Another aspect of this that needs to be emphasized is that Marinol is not medical marijuana, and any suggestion that it is is a deliberate disinformation. Marinol is just a synthetic form of THC, whereas medical marijuana has over 70 active compounds acting in concert, creating that coherent Whole that is Medical Marijuana, and this Whole is much greater than the simple sum of its parts, much less any one individual part! One does not need to be doctor to see this clearly!

Grandgee:

what you meant was:

You're kidding, right? We have enough trouble.

(That's "you're" with an apostrophe, a comma after "kidding" and a question mark after "right." The subject of the next sentence should be "We" and not "You.")

Why is it that most prohibitionists write as if they haven't graduated from third grade?

Ignorance?

Check out US v. Steele. The first Federal Marijuana case allowing a medical defense. This could change everything.

O'Rourke, Byrd, and Ortega all have my vote! I'm proud that they are speaking out against the violence and our current failed drug laws. I don't see any other politicians caring or telling it how it is. 40 years of history and a trillion dollars of tax payers' money have clearly stated that this drug war is nothing but a failure for our communities. It is so obvious, I just don't understand how people can possibly keep their minds closed to the idea of legalizing cannabis.

The legalization of marijuana will not only destabilze the cartels, save billions of $$$ for a damaged economy, it will create space in prisons for "real" criminals, like rapist, murderers, and child molestors since everyday thousands of nonviolent offenders are arrested on marijuana possesion. It will create jobs, growing, harvesting, etc.. Make billions by taxing marijuana not only save money for our country, will help the enviroment, paper can be made with hemp instead of acre of forests.

LEGALIZE NOW. I WILL PARTAKE ON SMOKE BREAKS EVERY CHANCE AVAILABLE.

No one i mean no one has ever died from the actual act of using marijuana. Yet cigarettes are legal? WTF. Legalize it already and put a huge nail in the cartels coffin.

The drug czar’s Rx for prison fodder costs dearly, as lives are flushed down expensive tubes. My shaman’s second opinion is that psychoactive plants are God’s gift. Behold, it’s all good. When Eve ate the apple, she knew a good apple, and an evil prohibition. Canadian Marc Emery is being extradited to prison for helping American farmers reduce U. S. demand for Mexican pot.

Gee, lets see, boycott Arizona because they passed a law that is not "the silver bullet" with regard to immigration but ask for a law to legalize marijuana because "the status quo not working". These are our reps. depressing

If marijuana is so bad for you. Than how is it that just about every body out there has tried it and moved on to become even world leaders. To indulge in hypocrisy can never be the answer. Better to look at the evil behind the lie that serves only to feed the greed. Fighting the cartels with a government regulated industry is like locking the vault on a thief. Mr.O'Rourke and Mrs.Byrd have my vote.

Your kidding! Right! You have enough trouble..
