At least six people were injured after a 30-inch oil pipeline exploded in Central Mexico State Sunday.

Mexican authorities said the oil pipeline exploded early Sunday morning, sending plumes of flame and smoke hundreds of feet into the air.

According to Mexican Civil Protection authorities, the explosion happened in a rural area and did not threaten homes or communities.

Media reports said police and others responding to the fire were among the six injured.

The state-run petroleum company Pemex, said the explosion was likely caused by illegal tapping.

Pemex immediately suspected the supply of crude oil through the pipeline.
