LAS CRUCES— Las Cruces police went undercover on Friday to nab traffic violations in a traffic operation and issued more than 100 citations.

LCPD issued 122 citations during Friday's traffic enforcement operation at Lohman Ave. between I-25 and Walnut St. LCPD officers involved in the operation posed as a city street crew and worked undercover to witness violations. The officers wore maintenance uniforms and were working near a utility truck. These officers then radioed fellow LCPD officers who in turn conducted the traffic stops down the road.

Of the 122 citations, 74 were issued to drivers whom were using a cell phone while operating a motor vehicle. 18 citations were issued for operating a motor vehicle without mandatory insurance, and 13 were for not wearing a seatbelt. The remaining 17 citations were for various citations, such as no driver's license, window tint violation, no registration, and speeding.

LCPD officers also arrested three people for possession of marijuana, or other drug paraphernalia.

LCPD is planning future operations similar to Friday's.

So instead of going undercover to catch REAL criminals (rapists, burglars, etc), you're going to use your undercover budget to catch people committing misdemeanors? You have got to be kidding me.
