Las Cruces Police have arrested Guy Jaime Young, 42, in connection with a violent hammer-attack and robbery inside an elderly Las Cruces couple's home Wednesday morning that left one of the victims fighting for his life.

Police were dispatched to a home in the 800 block of Camino Del Rex just after 9 a.m. Wednesday morning where they discovered a married elderly couple suffering from multiple blunt-force trauma injuries.

Officers learned that Young approached the 82-year-old man in his front yard and exchanged words with the elderly man before striking him over the head with a hammer. Young then allegedly entered the home through the open garage and approached the man's wife, a 79-year-old woman who was talking on the telephone.

Young then allegedly knocked the phone out of the woman's hand and struck her over the head with a hammer. He allegedly proceeded to demand the woman hand over money and the keys to the couple's 2003 Ford pick-up truck.

As soon as Young was able to get the keys to the truck, he fled the scene. The woman was able to call 911 for help and gave a description of Young and the truck. He was located by officers about 90 minutes later at the Travelcenters of America store on Motel Boulevard.

The 82-year-old man was taken to University Medical Center in El Paso with injuries that may possibly be life-threatening according to LCPD. The 79-year-old woman was taken to Mountain View Regional Medical Center.

Young has now been charged with two counts of attempted murder, two counts of aggravated burglary with a deadly weapon, two counts of robbery, three counts of tampering with evidence and one count of unlawful taking of a motor vehicle.

During the course of the investigation, police learned that Young had just been released from the Dona Ana county Detention Center less than 12 hours before after being arrested Tuesday morning at La Llorona Park by a Dona Ana County Sheriff's Deputy. Young allegedly found Young at the park in possession of a controlled substance and was found to be in violation of his probation.

Young has now been booked into the Dona Ana County Detention Facility on a $500,000 bond.
