LCPD: DWI crash downs power lines, forces closure of Rinconada Blvd.

LAS CRUCES, NM (KTSM) - A suspected DWI crash early Friday morning has forced the closure of Rinconada Boulevard in Las Cruces for power line repairs.

The crash happened just before 3 a.m. Friday when a car crashed into a utility pole causing the power lines to droop over the roadway. El Paso Electric crews were dispatched to repair the damage.

According to court records, Destiny Sanchez, 20, was driving east on Highway 70 when she looked at her phone while passing a semi-truck in the outside (right) lane. She allegedly lost control of her Hyundai Sonata and hit an electrical pole on the north side of Bataan Memorial East.

A breathalyzer performed at the scene showed that Sanchez blew at .18, twice the legal limit according to the documents.

The electrical repairs are expected to last most of Friday. For safety purposes, Rinconada Blvd. will be closed between Bataan Memorial West and Northrise Drive. The eastbound ramp from Hwy. 70 at Rinconada will also be closed.

Sanchez was not injured in the crash. She is currently being held without bond at the Doña Ana County Detention Center.
