LAS CRUCES— A woman was arrested after she stole a marked Las Cruces police unit and crashed it Thursday morning.

A LCPD officer was investigating a crash on Missouri Ave. near Gladys Dr. when 29-year-old Megan Gutierrez is said to have jumped into the officer's unit and sped off. Gutierrez drove south on Gladys and west on Wyoming.

As Gutierrez attempted to turn south onto Locus, Gutierrez nearly hit a bicyclist when she then hit a 24-year-old woman driving a Dodge Raider nearly head-on. Gutierrez attempted to run from the accident on foot but was tackled to the ground by the alert woman. She was soon taken into police custody.

LCPD said Gutierrez was not involved in the first crash and seems to have been passing by the scene on foot when she stole the unit.

LCPD is continuing the investigation. Additional charges are expected to be filed later Thursday.
