Woman Had Restraining Order Against Ex-Boyfriend
LAS CRUCES - A woman who had a restraining order against her ex-boyfriend shot him early Wednesday morning after he attempted to break into her home.
The 32-year-old woman shot John C. Bumgarner, 23, of the 5200 block of Mimosa Lane, after Bumgarner attempted to break into the home on the 3700 block of Mondale Loop around 2:00 a.m.
The woman woke up after hearing the noise, and armed herself with a handgun. LCPD said she went outside her home to confront the man who was trying to hide his identity with a bandana. The woman recognized Bumgarner, whom she had dated for a year, and told him to leave. Bumgarner refused, said police, and began approaching the woman, who then fired one shot, which hit Bumgarner in the leg.
Bumgarner ran to his pickup truck, which he'd parked down the street, and fled the area. He was found and arrested by police officers responding to the scene.
Bumgarner was charged with felony counts of breaking and entering, aggravated assault, possession of burglary tools, and violating a restraining order.
He is being held at the Dona Ana County Detention Center with a bond set at $25,000.
No charges are expected to be filed against the woman.
