LAS CRUCES - A Las Cruces woman was charged withbattery after kicking and biting a Las Cruces police officer. Officers had responded to a disturbance call Wednesday morning on the 5300 hundred block of Central Avenue reporting that Mary Lou Benavidez, 54, was acting disorderly.

While checking the welfare of Benavidez, officers reported that she approached and kicked one of the officers, who then detained and transported her to the Las Cruces Police Department.

Police reports say Benavidez proceeded to bite the officer's forearm while being placed in the booking area. The bite was said to have broken the officer's skin and require medical attention.

Benavidez faces two counts of battery on a peace officer, and was incarcerated at the Dona Ana County Detention Center on a $5,000 bond.
