LAS CRUCES-- A teen whom was arrested in April for raping a 12-year-old boy was arrested again on Thursday after threatening her sister with a handgun.
Melanie Maya Freeman, 19, has been charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, intimidation of a witness, and resisting or obstructing a police officer. Freeman was taken to the Dona Ana County Detention Center with a cash-only bond set at $20,000.
Las Cruces police were called to the 1900 block if Avenide de Mesilla where Freeman's sister lives after 10:00 in the morning. LCPD said that Freeman had gone to the house and got into an argument with her sister. LCPD also said that Freeman became verbally aggressive and actually threw and object at her sister. During the argument, Freeman took out a handgun and threatened her sister with it.
Freeman left the scene on a motorcycle with her 38-year-old boyfriend. LCPD, with the assistance of the Mesilla Marshall's office, found Freeman at the 1500 block of Burke Road. Freeman refused to leave the home, but eventually did and was arrested. Her boyfriend has not been charged in this case.
LCPD also said that while Freeman was in a holding cell at the police station, Freeman briefly escaped from her handcuffs, but was quickly restrained again.
Freeman was charged with one count each of criminal sexual penetration of a minor and battery of a peace officer on April 20. Police said the 12-year-old victim was acquainted with Freeman's family. At the time of her first arrest, Freeman also had two outstanding municipal warrants for her arrest.
