Las Cruces Woman Charged with Child Abuse; Spits at Police Officer
LAS CRUCES— A woman has been arrested and charged with child abuse after her 6-year-old daughter went to school with visible bruises.
Police said the daughter of the unidentified 23-year-old woman, whose name is being withheld to protect the 6-year-old, missed class on Tuesday, but arrived with her mother to a parent-teacher conference later that afternoon. School officials noticed the little girl had been crying, and looked scared.
On Wednesday, school officials noticed bruising on the girl's earlobe. Officials then learned the mother had hit her for not cleaning her room; officials then reported the injuries to the Children, Youth and Families Department, and the Las Cruces Police Department was asked to investigate.
As LCPD investigators tried speaking with the woman at the police department, the 23-year-old suddenly became violent, and threw two chairs before trying to leave the station. She also allegedly spit toward the face of an LCPD officer who was trying to calm her down.
The woman was arrested and was charged on Thursday with one third-degree felony count of intentional abuse and one count of battery upon a peace officer, a fourth degree felony. She was taken to the Dona Ana County Detention Center with her bond set at $15,000.
