A Las Cruces woman is charged with the murder of a 22-year-old woman after an argument at a party Saturday morning.

Jacklyne P. Legarreta, 23, of the 1800 block of Seldon Avenue, was arrested shortly after the incident and is charged with an open count of murder and tampering with evidence.

Police said sometime after 1 a.m. Delia Vasquez, 22, was stabbed in the chest outside an apartment at 406 Vassar Ct.

Vasquez was taken to Memorial Medical Center and then flown to University Medical Center in El Paso where she died.

According to a criminal complaint, Vasquez attended the party with two other women.

In the complaint, Legarreta became upset after one of the women allegedly looked at her boyfriend inappropriately and confronted Vasquez's friend, Vanessa Montoya, for inviting the woman to the party.

Police said the argument became physical and that's when Vasquez stepped in to break up the fight.

The documents state Legarreta then began fighting with Vasquez.

Witnesses told police Legarreta fell to the ground while Vasquez grabbed her chest.

Friends helped Vasquez into a vehicle and began driving her to the hospital while Legarreta remained at the apartment and tried to clean herself.

Officers located Legarreta at the apartment and took her into custody.

Legarreta is being held at the Doña Ana County Detention Center with a bond set at $250,000.
