LAS CRUCES, N.M. (LCPD) — A woman suspected of embezzling a vehicle from a friend attempted to escape police custody on Monday morning.
Adria R. Salazar, 20, is charged with one count of embezzlement of a motor vehicle, escape or attempt to escape from a peace officer, and two counts of possession of a controlled substance.
Las Cruces Police say a friend loaned a 1990 silver Dogde Dynasty to Salazar at around noon on Sunday with the understanding that she would return the vehicle that evening.
Salazar never returned the vehicle, so the owner reported the incident to the Police at around 4 a.m. on Monday.
A Las Cruces officer located the vehicle with Salazar behind the wheel shortly after 7 a.m.
The officer placed her into custody in his police car.
Salazar complained that she was thirsty so the officer arranged water to be brought to her and when the water was given, she used the opportunity to run away from the police car. The officer regained custody of Salazar within 40 yards.
She was then found to be in possession with small amounts of heroin and methamphetamine and was booked into the Dona Ana County Detention Center with a bond set at $5,000.
