It's been a holiday tradition for about 30 years in Las Cruces and just keeps getting better with time.

Friday evening the city will host a tree lighting ceremony at Albert Johnson Park next to Branigan Library and City Hall.

"It is a fun thing," said Robert Caldwell with the city's Parks and Rec Department. "We see kids running around enjoying the park."

A 25-year-old tree will display about 100,000 lights that will stay on for the remainder of the holidays.

Parks and Rec will also be setting up lights along Main Street as a part of the holiday festivities.

It is expected to be cold at the time of the ceremony so people are advised to bundle up and hot chocolate and treats will be available.

The event is scheduled to start at 5:30 p.m. at Albert Johnson Park.
