Area breweries showcase local brews

LAS CRUCES, N.M. -- Thousands attended the first ever Las Cruces Tour De Beer festival at the Southern New Mexico Fairgrounds over the weekend.

The festival featured more than 130 beers from more than 30 different breweries including some from throughout New Mexico.

"We wanted a hot summer, cold beer kind of thing," said Dawn Starostka, organizer for the tour.

Starostka said she had been wanting to have a beer festival in the area for several years.

This year she decided to take the risk and spearhead the festival. For the first year, she was pleased with the turnout.

"We've probably got 1500 to 2000 people in here today (sunday)," Starostka said.

On Saturday they had about 4000 people. More people than they expected so they had to bring in extra help.

"People want to talk about the beer," Starostka said. "It's not just walk up, grab the beer and go."

Starotska said they had really long lines on Saturday, so they changed the format of where sampling booths were located at the fairgrounds.

For local breweries, it was an opportunity to reach people who might not be familiar with area beers.

"You get people coming out here and you start to get people falling in love with the beers," said Bryan Reedy, co-owner of Mimbres Brewing Company from Deming. "All of a sudden they start becoming regulars at your bars."

Mimbres Valley makes all their beers on site and have brewed more than 30 different beers in the two years since they've been in business.

During that time, Reedy said they have grown considerably and have gone from brewing once every month to every three days.

The company has even branched from Deming into Las Cruces. The company has opened up a bar on the corner of University Avenue and Espina Street.

Reedy said they will definitely attend next year's Tour De Beer festival, which is already in the works.
