It was a busy shopping weekend in Las Cruces thanks in large part to the state's tax-free holiday.

From Aug. - Aug. 4th shoppers in New Mexico have been saving money on the gross receipts tax on back-to-school necessities.

"It helps us out a lot," said shopper AJ Benitez. "It's amazing that we have the opportunity here in New Mexico to take advantage of that."

New Mexico is one of twelve states in the country with tax-free holidays the first weekend of August.

For the the state's ninth annual holiday, tax on clothes priced less than a $100 an item and on computers $1000 or less was completely exempt.

School supplies priced at $30 or less were also exempt.

"I'm thinking we can probably save close to $50 or $100 today," Benitez said.

It was those kind of savings that filled store parking lots throughout the city.

Shoppers were seen carrying large bags out of various stores and splurging a bit more in some cases.

"Well I can afford it cause there's no tax on it," said Kayla Alvidrez.

She like countless others was looking for a bargain and bought clothes for her brothers.

"Boys grow out of things relatively fast," she said.

Most shoppers said stores were extremely busy throughout the weekend.

Texas will hold it's tax-free holiday on Aug. 9th through Aug. 11th.
