A armed man allegedly trespassing outside a Las Cruces home Wednesday afternoon was shot by a Las Cruces police officer after the suspect did not drop his weapon and approached the officer.

The shooting happened at about 1p.m. on Corona del Campo Loop when police said a 5-year veteran officer asked a 23-year-old man to drop the knife.

"Officers gave commands to drop the knife, however the suspect closed distance in a threatening manner and an officer responded by firing at least one round," said Las Cruces Police Chief Richard Williams.

Chief Williams could not elaborate on where the man was shot but police said the man's injuries appear to be non-life threatening.

The suspect was treated on the scene then airlifted to an El Paso hospital for more treatment, according to police.

The officer was not hurt and will be placed on administrative leave while the Officer-Involved Incident Task Force conducts an investigation.

The task force is made up of investigators from New Mexico State Police, the Dona Ana County Sheriff’s Office, New Mexico State University Police and Las Cruces Police.

They're report will be given to the district attorney's office.
