Las Cruces Police investigate sexual assault case

A Las Cruces neighborhood is on edge after an alleged sexual assault of one of their neighbors last week.

LCPD said the incident happened last Tuesday, Feb. 11, at about 8 a.m. on the 700 block of Frank Maes Avenue.

Police said a 46-year-old woman awoke to the sound of her dogs barking and a man wearing a black ski mask and possibly a blue shirt standing over her in a bedroom.

The woman had returned home after dropping of her kids at schools and was taking a nap, according to police.

Detectives believe the man allegedly hit the woman knocking her unconscious and when she woke up about two hours later she realized she had been sexually assaulted.

"It's very disturbing obviously because we have perpetrator who preyed on somebody and violated them," said LCPD Spokesperson Dan Trujillo.

Police said the woman left the door unlocked and that's possibly how the man was able to get in.

The department advises the community to lock their doors and check windows at home and even their vehicles to help prevent these types of incidents.

Late last year there was a similar case out of Dona Ana but police said the man accused of sexual assault in late November was in custody at the time this most recent alleged assault took place.

Anyone with information that can help identify the suspect is asked to contact Las Cruces Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or send a tip via text message to CRIMES (274637), keyword LCTIPS.
The Crime Stoppers number and text messaging services are operational 24 hours a day and you do not have to give your name to collect a reward.
