LAS CRUCES, NM - Las Cruces Police and the District Attorney’s Office continue to investigate a deadly hit-and-run crash last week on Valley Drive.

Investigators have interviewed the driver and two passengers of the minivan who were involved in the crash that ended in the death of Ricardo Duarte. Police believe the minivan driven by a 21-year-old woman hit Duarte as he was riding his bicycle around 11 o'clock Wednesday, October 13.

According to police, the driver did not stop and render aid, instead drover off. Duarte was rushed to University Medical Center in El Paso where he died the following day.

Investigators are asking those who saw the crash to come forward. Anyone who has information is asked to call Las Cruces Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).

The sad and unfortunate fact is that there are likely no witnesses other than the passengers and driver of the van. They will most certainly stick together in whatever story they decide to make up and face minimal justice. Call me cynical, but we live in an age where no one takes personal responsibility for their actions, and buddies cover for one another. I'd be willing to bet they were all drunk or high, or at the very least the driver was talking or texting. Rest in peace, Mr. Duarte.
