Las Cruces Police arrest mother on child abuse charges
LCPD: 2 toddlers found wandering apartment complex, mother left to drink beer
Las Cruces, NM — A Las Cruces mother is under arrest, after allegedly leaving her 1- and 3-year-old children home alone while she went out drinking.
Las Cruces police say 25-year-old Kandy Marmolejo has been charged with two counts of child abuse.
According to police, officers were called to the 2200 block of Sambrano Avenue around 11:30 p.m. on Wednesday. There police say that neighbors found Marmolejo's 1- year-old son and 3-year-old daughter wandering outside of their apartment.
Police were told that Marmolejo's daughter was wandering around, asking for her mother, and her son was crawling around the parking lot.
Detectives believe that Marmolejo left her children alone for as many as four hours while she went to a friend's house and drank beer.
Officer say that, after finding the children outside, neighbor's telephoned Marmolejo who indicated that she would return home within an hour.
Police say that Marmolejo eventually returned home and retrieved her daughter from the neighbors. The neighbors refused to hand over her son and Marmolejo simply went back to her apartment.
LCPD officials add that other than Marmolejo's son being hungry, there were no apparent injuries to the children.
The children were turned over to the custody of the state's Children, Youth and Families Department.
Marmolejo was booked into the Dona Ana County Detention Center with bond set at $20,000.
