Las Cruces opposes reclassification of Spaceport America tax dollars
LAS CRUCES, N.M. — The City of Las Cruces passed a resolution Monday opposing the reclassification of sales tax money from Spaceport America.
Voters in Dona Ana and Sierra Counties approved to fund the spaceport and they also voted in favor keeping a part of sales tax dollars to pay for science, technology, engineering and mathematics programs at area school districts in both counties.
Proposed legislation would distribute those funds throughout the state equally, potentially costing area districts millions of dollars.
Monday city council voted to support Sierra County and Dona Ana County in their efforts to keep tax classification as is.
The legislative session begins January 21st.
