Las Cruces mother allegedly under the influence, strikes pole with 6-month-old daughter unrestrained in car

LAS CRUCES, N.M. — Las Cruces Police arrested Melissa Miranda, 27, for crashing her car while allegedly under the influence of alcohol, and possibly medication, while her 6-month-old daughter was unrestrained inside the car.
Police said Miranda struck a light pole shortly before 2:00 a.m. Wednesday on University Ave. near the intersection of S. Valley Dr.
Police said Miranda's 6-month-old daughter was not in a car seat, and was riding unrestrained on the lap of a passenger in the car. Miranda, and her daughter were taken to the hospital with minor injuries. The other passenger was also not seriously injured.
Investigators said Miranda drank alcohol and possibly took medication before she got behind the wheel.
Miranda is charged with one third-degree felony count of child abuse, and one count of driving under the influence. Police said she also had five outstanding warrants for her arrest.
Charges are pending against the 27-year-old passenger in the car.
Miranda's daughter was turned over to the custody of her father.
