LAS CRUCES - The mayor and police chief of Las Cruces is assuring the city that the community is safe.

Mayor Ken Miyagishima and Police Chief Richard Williams are responding to recent acts of violence in Las Cruces - specifically, the beating death of Onate High School senior Jerry Zamarripa and the resulting revenge killing of Julian Pena.

"I want to assure the residents of Las Cruces, that our community is very safe," said Miyagishima. "We condemn this type of senseless violence and will not tolerate it.”

"My thoughts and prayers go out to the victims of this senseless violence", says Las Cruces Police Chief Richard Williams. “I am extremely grateful to the men and women of law enforcement who worked around the clock to apprehend these violent offenders.”

“I commit to our citizens that we here at the City of Las Cruces will continue to work with our law enforcement partners in keeping our community safe,” says Miyagishima. "We also ask our residents to be vigilant regarding their surroundings and let our police department know if they see anything out of the ordinary and report it."
