Las Cruces Man Shoots at Neighbor's Home Through Attic
LAS CRUCES-- A man has been arrested after Las Cruces police say he fired rounds across the stree toward a neighbor's home.
Daniel E. Nevarez, 53, of the 1000 block of Poplar, used a hole or opening in his attic to fire shots, LCPD investigators said. They said that Nevarez fired shots toward another neighbor's home in an attempt to quiet a barking dog sometime in the past few weeks.
Before Friday, there hadn't been any evidence of the shootings, and no victims were identified. No injuries have been reported.
Police said Nevarez called LCPD to report that "undercover agents" and neighbors were illegally entering his home to "spy on him." Officers tried contacting Nevarez on Friday, but could not reach him, or find him.
Officers found shell casings and other evidence that indicated that shots had been fired from Nevarez's home and toward his neighbors. Police said Nevarez had also been acting differently in the previous weeks --the same time period when LCPD received at least two reports of shots being fired in the neighborhood.
On Friday afternoon, LCPD's SWAT and Hostage Negotiation teams made several attempts at contacting Nevarez and finally did reach him by telephone, and eventually convinced him to exit his home and peacefully surrender.
Nevarez was arrested and is charged with one count of shooting at or from a dwelling. Nevarez is being held at the Dona Ana County Detention Center with a cash-only bond set at $50,000.
