Las Cruces man found guilty of attempted murder
Friday, after 8 hours of deliberation a jury found Cornelius Renteria guilty of attempted first degree murder, aggravated burglary, child abuse and felon in possession of a firearm.
According to court documents, Christina Corral had been in an abusive relationship with the defendant, for about a year. On March 26, 2013 Renteria arrived at Ms. Corral’s home where a party was in progress. The defendant angrily ordered Corral to tell her guests to leave and if she did not comply he would return to ‘take care of her’.
On the morning of March 27th, Corral was awakened by her 9-year-old child telling her Renteria was attempting to get into their home. Corral opened the door and proceeded to the garage with Renteria so he could gather his remaining belongings. Renteria was in possession of a small revolver and began loading it telling her ‘things did not have to end this way’. Corral began running back to the house and tried to close the door behind her but Renteria overpowered her and began shooting, striking her three times. Her daughter attempted to intervene and the defendant then turned on the child and dry fired. Renteria then began beating the victim with the gun and a large metal can, striking her several times in the head. Corral’s 2 and 4 year old children witnessed the assault. Renteria then left, the children begin screaming for help as Corral stumbled outside and a passerby called 9-1-1.
Corral was transported to El Paso for her injuries/
Prosecuting Attorney, Heather Chavez, stated: “This was an extremely brutal crime. I am happy that Mr. Renteria was held accountable and am hopeful that Ms. Corral and her children will now be able to find some peace and move forward with their lives. “
