Doña Ana County Sheriff's deputies responded to the 4500 block of Los Morenos Court on Saturday, after a woman reported that her boyfriend had allegedly struck her repeatedly as she tried to breastfeed their two-month-old baby boy.
The victim told investigators, 40 year old, Alfredo Zuniga Gonzales, had reportedly placed his knee on the child's stomach as the baby was nursing. Gonzales allegedly grabbed the baby from his mother and struck the woman with one hand while he held the baby in the other.
The mother left the residence with her two other children, but returned shortly after in an attempt to take the baby.
The woman told investigators Gonzales allegedly punched in the face again.
Gonzales was arrested and transported to the Doña Ana County Detention Center on two charges of battery against a household member and one count of third-degree child abuse.
A victim's advocate with the Doña Ana County Sheriff's Department escorted the victim and the baby to an area hospital for evaluation.
Medical staff determined the baby did not suffer any serious injuries.
Child Protective Services is conducting a separate investigation of the incident.
Gonzales was arraigned Monday, where his bond was reduced from $85,000 to $50,000.
According to records, Gonzales was currently awaiting trial on two separate domestic abuse charges involving the same woman from August and November of last year. Charges were also filed against Gonzales in January 2012, but were later dismissed.
