Criminal Complaint reveals new details in Friday homicide

The Criminal Complaint against a 35-year-old Las Cruces man accused of brutally murdering his mother with a sword was obtained by NewsChannel 9 on Monday morning.

In the complaint, new details emerged about the final moments of 56-year-old Lisa Cano's life. Joshua Hunt, Cano's 35-year-old son reportedly woke up around 4 a.m. and began contemplating all of the things that  he perceived his mother had done to him in the past. In the complaint, the arresting officer said that Hunt told him that Cano was 'controlling, manipulative, and constantly put him down.'

Hunt told later told his wife that he could no longer let her live, and he retrieved a sword that was a replica from the movie '300' and entered Cano's bedroom. Cano reportedly opened her eyes and saw Hunt standing over her where he then reportedly spoke to his mother  before he allegedly began attacking her with the sword.

After the attack, Hunt cleaned up, put on a hoodie and ate a banana before going outside of the home to wait for police to arrive. According to the criminal complaint, Hunt told the arresting officer that "the world would be a better place without her" while referring to his mother.

Hunt's two children, ages 8 and 9 were in the home at the time of the attack and they were also reportedly woken by their father to let them know he had killed their grandmother.

A friend of Cano's disputes Hunt's claims that Cano was ever emotionally abusive or manipulative, telling NewsChannel 9 anonymously that they believed Josh Hunt was 'sick,' and that "Lisa Cano was the most loving, non-confrontational individual. She found the best in everyone, including her son. Everywhere she went she made friends instantly. Every life she touched was made better just by knowing her."

Hunt's wife posted a long, public message on Facebook expressing her grief over losing "the two adults who have had the most influence, who I spent the most time with, and who I loved the most." She describes the horrifying moments after her husband woke her up to tell her what he had done to his own mother, stating, "I must have made him repeat it 5 or 6 times. I was hoping I was just still asleep and that it was all a bad dream. Each time he said it, my heart beat faster and faster. And then everything in my world felt like it crumbled to the ground."

Hunt's wife goes on to describe the tumultuous relationship between her husband and his mother saying that despite their struggles she always remained close with her mother-in-law.

"I get bundled up with Josh 'cause well I am his wife, and I understand that. When you're married to someone it's kind of a package deal. Lisa and I always had a special bond. She never made me feel to blame; she never made me feel bad for what they were going through. We always found a way to relate and be positive," stated Hunt's wife in the Facebook post.

Cano's friends have started a Facebook page in her memory, encouraging others 'to live life as our departed friend Lisa Cano lived her life every day." The page is dotted with words of sadness and posts from Cano's friends about her art.

Josh Hunt is set to be arraigned in Dona Ana County Court on Monday afternoon on first Degree Murder and one count of tampering with evidence.

We will have a full report from Zach Rael at 5 & 6pm.
