LAS CRUCES, N.M. --  Firefighters in Las Cruces are hoping everybody follows fireworks restrictions, and stays safe during the 4th of July holiday.

"Be safe and use common sense," said Fire Inspector Wally Monsivaiz.

The city has banned aerial fireworks and firecrackers, but will allow handheld sparklers as well as cones and smoking devices.

"If it's loud and it goes up high in the air, chances are it's illegal," Monsivaiz said.

Monsivaiz said to be cautious where and what type of fireworks people buy. Some fireworks are allowed in Mesilla but banned within Las Cruces city limits.

"We recommend if you buy them in Las Cruces set them off in Las Cruces," Monsivaiz said. "If you buy them in Mesilla, set them off in Mesilla."

The Fire Prevention Bureau and codes enforcement officer will be patrolling the city. Fines can be as much as $300.

Permissible fireworks allowed to be purchased and discharged are ground and hand-held sparkling, and smoking devices:
